The Teacher Education Concentration is planned as an advanced professional degree option for students who have completed the requirements of a four-year curriculum in agriculture or allied fields of study. Areas of concentration include program planning, curriculum development, teaching methodologies, instructional technologies and youth development. Students in the program complete course work in both the traditional MS degree as well as teacher certification. The Council on Teacher Education serves as the governing body for certification at the University of Illinois, and specific course work can be planned for students to meet requirements for both certification and the Master of Science degree for on-campus students only.
To complete the degree, 35-37 hours of approved graduate level courses and 20 undergraduate level courses must be fulfilled. Previous College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) undergraduate course work may be used to fulfill the undergraduate course requirements if completed within 10 years of admission into the degree program and approved by the department. Candidates for certification must complete 40 days of student teaching during the final semester of course work. The AgEd master's program must be completed within five years after admission to the graduate college. Courses required in agriculture for the degree program may be selected from any department in ACES, other than in Agricultural Education, including courses from other off-campus programming in ACES. Applications for graduate students are accepted once a year, and the deadline is January 15th of each school year. Individuals teaching agriculture at the secondary level under a provisional certificate may select this concentration as an online/off-campus student. Applications for the online option are accepted year around. The deadline to begin in the fall is June 15th, spring is November 15th, and summer is March 15th of each school year.
