Principles of Ag Education

Course Description

Agricultural Education 220 provides students with an introduction to agricultural education programs and delivery systems as shaped by: state and federal policies, the nature of teaching in school and non-school settings, types and purposes of agricultural education, program components, principles of teaching and learning, community relationships, and reflective teaching.

Upon completion of Ag Ed 220, students will be able to:

  • Describe the nature and role of agricultural education including the purposes, structure, and scope of education in/about agriculture.
  • Identify the major events, leaders, and philosophical thrusts that shaped agricultural education from its inception at Land-grant institutions to present day.
  • Recognize the roles and responsibilities of agricultural educators in both formal and non-formal teaching settings.
  • Identify effective instructional methods for diverse learning styles.
  • Apply appropriate modes of planning and evaluating instruction as well as for assessing learning in agricultural education.
  • Explain the nature and importance of post-secondary and adult education in agriculture.
  • Describe the nature and role of agricultural literacy programs in non-school settings.
  • Describe state and national leadership structures influencing agricultural education.
  • Understand the diversity and breadth of agricultural education and its potential impact on the lives of society.
  • Make an informed decision about agricultural education as a potential career option.
